FOUNDER

Kimberly Ferrara
President and Founder

I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you why I started this foundation and what I hope to get out of it.

Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to experience of variety of work environments (from teaching in a private school classroom to managing financial analysis for a fortune 500 company) and recently found myself looking for a way that my talents could give back to society. With this desire in hand, I began to look for a cause to which I could contribute. It was about this time that two incidents occurred: one of my good friends was diagnosed with cancer and I read a compelling interview from Lance Armstrong. In this interview, Mr. Armstrong stressed the overwhelming need from more cancer research and research funding. As I researched the situation (for myself and my friend), I confirmed that he was absolutely correct.

Currently, it is estimated that one in three individuals will develop cancer within their lifetime. This means that at least one member of my immediate family (possibly myself) and a couple of my friends would fall victim to this deadly disease (something that just made my heart ache).

Unfortunately, while the disease is growing, funding is not. The federal government has been stretched thin between economic struggles and natural disasters and has been forced to curtail its current medical research funding (with cancer research taking the largest cut among all areas of the National Institutes of Health); in addition, the philanthropy community, although extremely generous, often overlooks the colder face of research in favor of easing the heart wrenching pain of a victim. It is easier to give to a victim with a face and a story, than an unknown scientist.

It is here that I wanted to help. Cancer victims absolutely need help and support and there are already some amazing institutions, like the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the American Cancer Society, doing just that. However, I as many others, believe that stopping cancer at it source is essential for true relief from the disease and that this can only be accomplished with dedicated and innovative research... here is where my mission began and the Cancer Research Foundation was born...

GOVERNANCE

The Cancer Research Foundation Board of Directors encourages, guides, and monitors our mission to raise funds for cancer research in innovative and easy ways. The Board of Directors encourages our growth and impact, and, at the same time, continues to monitor the purpose and success of our recipients... all with the goal of effectively funding diverse and innovative cancer research leading to a cure.
